Project Difficulties With the Unseasonal Weather.

The previous insect photography project that I referred to in the ''previous insect photography project'' page on this blog was one of the main sources of inspiration for my Negotiated Final Major Project.

I received the brief for the my book-making module towards the end of March in 2011.

The day that we were given our brief, the weather was beautiful, the sun was shining and the sky was blue.

In the first four weeks of this module, I was able to successfully complete all of the photography for this module in perfect weather conditions.

I share an allotment with my Mum and I was down there almost every day in my shorts and t-shirt and actually got sunburnt during the duration of this project as I was spending most of my day in the outdoors.

This great weather was a big factor in the successful completion of this module in which, I received the highest grade of my entire degree programme attaining a grade A which I was particularly proud of.

It was the prior knowledge that the weather could be this good in March that inspired me to undertake my final project in this manner.

At the end of March this year however, we are in the middle of an exceptionally cold spell of weather which we would be more used to experiencing in the depths of mid-winter.

Weather: Man Dies In Snow Trying To Get Home
Sky News article from the12th May 2013.

The two news articles above from both Sky news and BBC news illustrate the significant difference in the weather between 2011 when I undertook my highly successful macro-insect photography project Another World and the completely unseasonal weather that we have experienced so far in 2013.

This time two years ago, I was sunburnt during a period of absolutely perfect weather and at the same time of year two years later, a man has unfortunately dies by becoming trapped in the snow and the country is buried under a blanket of snow !

This terrible weather has had a really detrimental effect on the initial idea for my project.

I have been unable to find a single specimen in the wild as everything is still hiding as if it were still the middle of winter. I have barely seen a single insect in the wild so far.

I consider myself relatively experienced at finding and locating insects in the wild but have not been able to find anything at all so far.

The professional establishments that I have consulted with so far have also experienced similar difficulties with the weather and this is exceptionally worrying and makes me question the validity of my initial idea as I no longer feel that it will be feasible to achieve with any degree of success.

As my final major project, this will not do and I now need to significantly re-evaluate my idea.
